Resuscitation

NRP - Neonatal Resuscitation Program is a resuscitation program for healthcare providers practicing in a variety of arenas, including the pre-hospital, labor and delivery, emergency, and critical care settings. The NRP course focuses on the care of the newborn at the time of delivery. Participants may include physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, paramedics, mid-level practitioners and others. NRP is an evidenced based program and is sponsored by the American Heart Association (AHA) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).

The NRP course format changed considerably in 2011. Prior to the course, students are responsible for the course content contained in the Textbook of Neonatal Resuscitation, 6th Edition including: an overview and principles of resuscitation; initial steps in resuscitation; use of resuscitation devices for positive-pressure ventilation; chest compressions; tracheal intubation; medication; special considerations; resuscitation of babies born pre-term; and ethics and care at the end of life. After study and preparation students must successfully complete the online examination offered by HealthStream.

The NRP course is approximately 8 hours and includes static skills stations; integrated scenario based skills stations; and videotaped simulation with debriefing. The course focuses on the integration of cognative and psychomotor skills, critical leadership, effective communication, patient safety and team work.

Upon successful completion of the NRP Provider course, you will receive course completion card that is  valid for a period of two years. A provider renewal course must be completed prior to the “Recommended Renewal Date” as there is no grace period.

PALS - Pediatric Advanced Life Support is a pediatric resuscitation program designed for healthcare providers practicing in a variety of arenas, including the pre-hospital, emergency, and critical care settings. Participants include nurses, respiratory therapists, paramedics, physicians and others. PALS is offered by the American Heart Association (AHA) and co-branded with the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).

PALS reflects the 2010 American Heart Association Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care. The course format includes: lectures with video clips, practical skills stations, simulated clinical scenarios and a multiple choice examination.

Course content includes: 1 and 2 rescuer child CPR and AED; 1 and 2 rescuer infant CPR; management of respiratory emergencies; rhythm disturbances and electrical therapy; vascular access; resuscitation team concept; cardiac, respiratory and shock case discussions and simulations;  and systematic approach to pediatric assessment

The initial provider course is approximately 14 hours in length. Those who complete the course successfully receive a course completion card that is valid for a period of two years. The renewal course is approximately 8 hours in length. Those who complete the renewal course successfully receive a course completion card that is valid for a period of two years.

ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support is an adult cardiac resuscitation program designed for healthcare providers practicing in a variety of arenas, including the pre-hospital, emergency, and critical care settings. Participants include nurses, respiratory therapists, paramedics, physicians and others. ACLS is offered by the American Heart Association (AHA).

ACLS reflects the 2010 American Heart Association Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care. The course format includes: lectures with video clips, practical skills stations, simulated clinical scenarios and a multiple choice examination.

Course content includes: BLS skills (effective chest compressions, use of a bag-mask device, and use of an AED); recognition and early management of respiratory and cardiac arrest; recognition and early management of peri-arrest conditions such as symptomatic bradycardia; airway management; related pharmacology; management of acute coronary syndromes (ACS) and stroke; effective communication as a member and leader of a resuscitation team; and effective Resuscitation Team Dynamics.

The initial provider course is approximately 10 to 12 hours in length. Those who complete the course successfully receive a course completion card that is valid for a period of two years. The renewal course is approximately 5 to 6 hours in length. Those who complete the renewal course successfully receive a course completion card that is valid for a period of two years.
